i just shot your ex-girlfriend

my favorite youtube director... well, actually to call him a youtube director i think does him a disservice, because i admire his work regardless of his online presence. anyway, mr. Boivin, i salute you.

slow-motion + stephen hawking = win

fuckin' rad video combining three things i love, slow motion, stephen hawking, and electronic beats. the juxtaposition of stephen hawking talking about the survival of the human race and humans in balaclavas destroying things is nifty (although not particularly mind-blowing) but if you think that's the important part you obviously weren't paying attention to the slow-mo fire! that's fuckin' rad!

this made me cry a little. it's what the internet was made for: geeks helping geeks (well, it's what it was made for after it was made to be a military network to keep the us connected even in the event of catastrophic bombing).

this song is going out, to all the people starting businesses doin' what they love.

hyper realistic acrylic painting

i love magic tricks, so it's not surprising that i also love art which fools the viewer. Alexa Meade's paintings are out of control. apparently, for these, she paints on real objects with acrylic paint to make them look as if they are part of a painting. then she photographs them, and voila! magical illusions... kind of like a more awesome inversion of photoshopping someone into a photo... there may be some kind of statement about objectification of humans or something like that, but this is art than i get an incredibly visceral kick out of, so i'm not inclined to look very hard.

portfolio and flickr feed for more current work.

"skinput"

ever wished your forearm could be used as a keyboard? me neither, but after watching this video it seems like it might be kinda cool, or, maybe if i could move the photoshop tool palette to the back of my arm, that might be kind of useful. every time i see this kind of scifi idea becoming reality, i can't help but think of this time i was at a tradeshow with an acquaintance who well, i'm not sure what she actually does, but she worked at microsoft and it was rumored that she had one of the original XBOX's that bill gates had sent to her as a present. needless to say, she had tech cred. but we were at this tradeshow back in early 2000 and watching a demo of apple's aperture, which was in beta then. during the cataloging segment she asked if there was going to be facial recognition in addition to their keyword database. the presenter kind of laughed at her and intimated that facial recognition was the stuff of scifi or at least not out of the MIT or DARPA research phase. even i was a little embarrassed, but guess what fucko-presenter-man, apple iphoto has facial recognition. it's not particularly good, but it has it. what pisses me off tho, is how quickly he dismissed the idea as silly. you know what other innovations got laughed at? sewing machines, typewriters, zippers, umbrellas, women's suffrage... also, the mouse.

it's not to say that all new ideas are good ideas... but just because someone laughs at it or doesn't initially see value, doesn't mean it's a bad idea.

best shock machine ever

so, these guys have modified the mattel mindflex to SHOCK you if your brain activity becomes too frantic... which is funny because once you get shocked i'm sure your brain activity shoots through the roof, shocking you again, increasing your activity again. this might be a good way to train yourself though to stay calm through pain or other adverse situations. i remember this black belt told me, a persons reaction, when they get punched, is to close their eyes, and how you have to condition yourself not to blink when you get punched. this is kind of the same thing, except, it's a shock... i really want one of these.

OKGO this to shall pass - oners make me cry

you've probably seen the video. not the marching band one, but the one with the rube goldberg machine. here Adam Sadowsky, the president (?) of Syyn Labs explains the process of building this machine. the best piece of advice: put the big reliable stuff at the end of the take to shorten reset times.

this video gets me a little choked up at the end, when it tilts up to (what I assume is) the crew of the video cheering for a good take. this might be less significant to anyone who's never put together a "oner" but trying to do something complex with many moving parts and record it all in a single moving shot is probably one of the most stressful kinds of shots a crew can put together. but when it comes together, and everyone hits their marks, and all the gags happen right on time, it's truly great feeling. i've never really been much for team sports, but i imagine it's the same sort of elation a team feels after pulling together and making a big play. it's an inspiring feeling that if enough people got together and focused their desires into a singular goal, anything would be possible.
