New Mario Bros. Movie Trailer | The Game Station Exclusive!

yup. here's something we did called The Brothers Mario. it was a long time coming... i think we thought of this like 6 years ago.

... and now it's doing pretty well. we had over 1 million hits this morning. so we've been getting coverage from a ton of places, most of it is good. it's a pretty good ending to this year (wherein i got fired twice from directorial gigs).

Tyra Banks: Dark Magic

tyra bank's biggest beauty secret ever! from wolfgore. it's another grand example of context jacking in the flavor of everything is terrible. "context jacking" is how my buddy ben refers to this kind of stuff, wherein videos are edited out of context to make them appear crazier, creepier, and more hilarious. this video is one of the best pieces of context-jacking however, in that even if you were to step back and say, "i'm sure this is just out of context" and then try to construct a context in which this would make sense... it is really difficult, which makes it seem even more awesomely absurd.

$100 > PC

So it is nearly there.  Built from spare parts handed down to me by various friends (thanks MdotStrange and Lam) combined with some ram off craigslist (20 bucks) and a cpu heatsync (30 bucks w a 12 dollar rebate).... I plan on shoving this micro atx mobo into the @ase from my dead mac pro.

the only thing that is going to put me over 100 bucks is probably getting a legit copy of windows...

Anyone out there got an oem copy of windows laying around?

3D Video Capture with Kinect

Celebrity Dick Match 2010

so a guy i know makes graff videos for this paint company. here's the latest one "celebrity dick match" (Michael Bolton? no way!). it's basically a bunch of guys drawing dicks, and while i can't back the idea that painting dicks on overpasses is particularly artful it does express the deep hatred i feel for my fellow humans in LA when i'm sitting in traffic or waiting in line at some crowded place i don't want to be... i often think to myself, "fuck you, you grove-lovin' bougey muthafuckah, get off your damn phone and drive, i wish i had a paint pen so i could draw a cock on your forehead! and take off those goddamn glasses, they don't even have lenses!" so there ya go, maybe it is art expressing that...

the other Charlie Bronson

is this out? i just saw this trailer while surfing youtube. it looks super weird. i'd really like to see this, although i am wondering if the "isane weirdo is a brilliant artist" theme is getting a little played out in this era.

AKB48 AKA a girl idol band with 48 memebers

because as any creative exec, marketing exec, or A&R person will tell you.... what's better than 1 cute girl who can kind of sing and dance? 2 girls who can kind of sing and dance (thus Tatu)! but what's better than that? how about 5 girls (thus Wondergirls)! not to be out done, someone in Japan asked, what if you had 48? then you'd have AKB48, and that's got to bring in 48 times the profit!

i can only hope that one day i get to direct a video for this group. coming up with scenarios for 48 japanese girls to act out in a 3 minute span would be creatively very challenging (staging an all girl riot springs to mind, or maybe something like a smaller version of the epic north korean dance presentation). i can only imagine how much fun the challenge of lighting 48 dancers and fitting them into the same shot and then watching to make sure none of them fuck up their moves. and on top of that, i have a hard time remembering the names of singular people i just met, three is near impossible for me. i think at 48 though, they would understand right? "hey.. uh, you, in the school girl outfit uh... with the baggy socks... and the pony tail, no, not you, her, heeeer! *sigh* yeah, that's probably fine."

科学映像館 WILD PLANTS OF JAPAN Chrsathemum japonense(ノジギク)(AKA everything is creepier in time-lapse!)

it's just a vide of a flower blooming.. a japanese chrysanthemum... what' so gross about that? i have trypophobia. well, anyway, this youtube account has a ton of these time-lapse science videos shot in japan, and they are super eery but also beautiful at the same time.

Tuff People shoot

IMG_6501.jpg, originally uploaded by the_urchin.

so i did a shoot with Stephanie Sheh recently. she suggested the theme was 'tuff people' so we tried to think of things that 'tuff' people would do. it was fun, it included drinking tabasco, eating raw meat, drinking rum, smoking cigarettes, and pointing guns.....

Nobody Internet Submissions!

so i came a little late to the Wonder Girls party... i had wanted to do a supercut of all the people who did Wondergirls dance covers (because there are many) but of course, someone at their label already did a supercut of people on the internet doing the dance. it's really interesting to me how the meme of song and dance is so infectious and powerful. singing and dancing is probably hardwired into our lizard brain from our more primitive days.

i still might do that supercut. better late than never i suppose.

The Legend of Zelda: Real Life

i had always wondered about this: in RPGs it seems generally permissible to wander into people's houses, open up their treasure chests, or in the case of Link, smash their pots and chop their plants in order to find hearts and rupees. maybe in japan if you were on a quest that behavior was considered just fine.

if me and nathan collaborated on a video game, it would probably be a lot like this....

Wood block print

So this weekend in addition to attending nick and shawntes wedding, i went to the palace legion of honor in sf for the "japanesque" exhibit (which reminded me that japan only fully opened up to the west 150 years ago, and that there have been weabos at least as long).

Anyway they had a workshop wherein we got to learn how to make woodblock prints from the artist Tomoko Murasaki.  It was pretty rad.

making woodblock prints is relatively simply: get a woodblock, draw an image, carve the image out of the block, ink the block, press the paper on the block and voila. making a good woodblock print is another story.

zero points of articulation

saw this on technabob.

yup, a monolith action figure from 2001... with zero points of articulation (obviously... because it's a big black block).

this is actually a fake toy aby thinkGeek, but you can vote for it to be turned into a real product. of course if you really want one, I've got a DIY kit version (it's a sharpie and a piece of wood).

three six mafia- weak azz bitch

when I say "weak-ass" you say "bitch!" another hilarious mash.

pork-chop and brie sammich

Pork chop and brie sandwich

Ingedients

1 porkchop

1 clove of garlic

1 stalk of celery

2 leaves fresh basil

a bit of garlic chives

Brie cheese

In a pan heat a little butter and your pressed clove of garlic.  Chop the garlic chive finely and smear them on the boneless porkchop and dice your celery.  Once the butter is melted throw in your pork chop and celery in and cook it on med heat.

While thats cooking, toast your bread.  I used wheat.  Try to time it so that the toast comes out when your pork finishes.

Once the toast is done spread brie cheese on one or both pieces of bread, as you would spread butter.  Take your pork, chop into strips and arrange them on the bread, with a leaf of basil, followed by the celery.  Close your sandwich and eat it.

Xbox commecial that was banned

this was a supposedly banned Xbox commercial (although more likely some execs saw it and decided it was too risky to air), but the concept is really awesome, people playing shoot-out like the creator no doubt did when he/she was a little kid. it would provide fuel though, for all those people who believe that playing violent video games leads to violent behavior. but on that topic, humans were violent long before video games, television, music, and popular culture glorified it. in fact, we were violent long before we were even homo-sapiens. yup, everyone has a tiger inside of them.

Genki Sudo Highlight 4

update: so I think I have found my new hero. this guy, Sudo Genki, in addition to making rad music videos, was once a professional MMA fighter, competing in K1 and various other fighting leagues. watch the highlight reel, this guy gets crazy. also, i do not endorse "Rage Against the Machine" but the other highlight video had LimpBizkit, which is even more obnoxious.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genki_Sudo

須藤元気(Genki Sudo) 「WORLD ORDER」の"MIND SHIFT"フルver.PV

this video is great. i've never heard of this band but my friend sent me a link. it contains so many things i love: a simple idea that is mind-blowing without digital effects, electronic music, japan, and popping. the thing i love about popping is that it's such a weird style of dance, and every culture deals with it differently. in the US, popping and b-boying in general is almost always about being cool, but in japan popping kind of evolved in it's own way and japanese poppers tend to be more out-there. just like in this video, they aren't afraid of being weird or surreal (contrarily, most of the time that seems like the goal).

relic developed dies, game community supports widow and unborn child

so Brian Wood, a developer from relic was killed by an allegedly drunk driver, which sucks ass. but he is also survived by a pregnant wife, who according to an article, was saved because he spun his car at the last moment so drunk driver hit his side of the car instead of hitting them head on.

the story does get brighter: after relic put news about his death on their website and thousands of gamers sent in condolences and donations to help his wife and child. i think that's pretty rad. most of these gamers probably didn't know this guy's name until he died, but they played his games, and then the paid it forward.

i don't think my industry would do the same.

anyway, his trust is here: http://www.brianwoodmemorialtrust.com/ and you can visit Relic at www.relic.com

i never played any of his games, and i'm broke, so i didn't donate, but i do send my condolences.

RIP Brian, alas, i never knew ye.

this guy, funymony, is a kid I met in Salt Lake City when I went to sundance with mdotstrange that one year we went... anyway, funymony and his friends were probably the best part of sundance. (playing mariokart with sean and dave and joe was the other highlight of the trip) i don't know if he's in school still or not, but he make some fun stuff.

awesomeness from Black Magic Roller Coaster

i saw these at the EVERYTHING IS TERRIBLE festival... at the festival, it was on a giant screen with no titles, which i really think is the way to go because it makes the punchlines that much more impactful (yup, I know that's really a word)... without titles there was no context, and so my thought process was something like, 'what is this? wait, is that what i think it is? holy shit this is rad!' giving the viewer a title like "Young Van Damme" the audience is already set up for the joke, but the surprise and the unknown is what really makes the humor work i think, and by taking away the titles it adds quite a bit of unknown... either way, these videos are just too awesome.

black magic roller coaster i salute you.

scammers?

I posted an ad for my camera on Craigslist.org and haven't really gotten any responses but today I got this from one "Mary Mario":

Thanks for your reply, i am very glad to know that the item is still available for purchase. however i have few questions that i will like to ask you....

I would like to know the reason why you are selling it, I'll also like to know the actual condition, i mean how it works. and if you still have the original box that it comes with and what is your firm price? though i can still afford the price tagged with the listing .

If you don't mind getting paid through paypal I'll like to purchase it for my friend Son who resides abroad, as a compensation to his excellence performance and achievement in his studies. Though I'll not be able to come for face 2 face transaction or for the pick up cause am a Naval officer and presently on a ship. But am ready to make the payment VIA PayPal..

I am ready to pay the amount you tagged with the listing and $120 for it shipping, because I'll not be able to do the shipping my self due to the nature of my job(i mean always on the ship).

So kindly send your PayPal email ID for the payment to be made instantly if you have an account with them already, and if you don't you can simply do that by going to www.PayPal.com to set it up, it very easy to set up so you can get back to me with the email id you use for the account.

I hope you will consider my request favorably. Your quick response will be appreciated

Thanks..
Best regards...

so this sounds fishing because 1.) they don't want to meet in person 2.) they want me to send it abroad, and 3.) I'm pretty sure navy folks can send and receive mail on a boat and 4.) the grammar resembles the grammar in those nigerian email scams, 5.) I googled this text, and many of the sentences came up on other blogs about scams...

I am curious as to how this scam works though. I suspect it is like those "deposit" scams, wherin someone wants to sublet your apartment, so they send you a check from another country and you deposit it, but what you don't know is that it's going to take a while to clear. But then the next day they call and say some emergency has come up and they need you to wire the money back to them, which you do because you are a nice person. But then the check they sent you doesn't clear, and now you have wired them the money, so you can't get it back. I imagine paypal has some kind of loophole like this, and now they have your goods.

good try scammers.

robots, net yet ready to be our friends

a ny times reporter did an interview with a robot that was supposed to be a "back-up" of a human, but we have a long way to go before we get replicants... still, this interview feels a lot like the way i feel when interacting with 1/3 of all the people i meet.

alice story book for ipad

children's books on ipad, great idea. this book looks ill, with all the interaction of falling jelly beans and bobble heads. it's just too bad the video is cut so obnoxiously, but the art and interaction looks really good, I think.. they ought to have slowed the pace a little so we might know for sure.

american commercials are becoming a lot like japanese TV

my friend ken pointed out how this old spice ad is a lot like something that would have run on japanese tv back in the late 90s when adobe after effects become popular in japan. i like how the surreal is becoming more acceptable here in the usa.

my favorite youtube director... well, actually to call him a youtube director i think does him a disservice, because i admire his work regardless of his online presence. anyway, mr. Boivin, i salute you.

slow-motion + stephen hawking = win

fuckin' rad video combining three things i love, slow motion, stephen hawking, and electronic beats. the juxtaposition of stephen hawking talking about the survival of the human race and humans in balaclavas destroying things is nifty (although not particularly mind-blowing) but if you think that's the important part you obviously weren't paying attention to the slow-mo fire! that's fuckin' rad!

hyper realistic acrylic painting

i love magic tricks, so it's not surprising that i also love art which fools the viewer. Alexa Meade's paintings are out of control. apparently, for these, she paints on real objects with acrylic paint to make them look as if they are part of a painting. then she photographs them, and voila! magical illusions... kind of like a more awesome inversion of photoshopping someone into a photo... there may be some kind of statement about objectification of humans or something like that, but this is art than i get an incredibly visceral kick out of, so i'm not inclined to look very hard.

portfolio and flickr feed for more current work.

"skinput"

ever wished your forearm could be used as a keyboard? me neither, but after watching this video it seems like it might be kinda cool, or, maybe if i could move the photoshop tool palette to the back of my arm, that might be kind of useful. every time i see this kind of scifi idea becoming reality, i can't help but think of this time i was at a tradeshow with an acquaintance who well, i'm not sure what she actually does, but she worked at microsoft and it was rumored that she had one of the original XBOX's that bill gates had sent to her as a present. needless to say, she had tech cred. but we were at this tradeshow back in early 2000 and watching a demo of apple's aperture, which was in beta then. during the cataloging segment she asked if there was going to be facial recognition in addition to their keyword database. the presenter kind of laughed at her and intimated that facial recognition was the stuff of scifi or at least not out of the MIT or DARPA research phase. even i was a little embarrassed, but guess what fucko-presenter-man, apple iphoto has facial recognition. it's not particularly good, but it has it. what pisses me off tho, is how quickly he dismissed the idea as silly. you know what other innovations got laughed at? sewing machines, typewriters, zippers, umbrellas, women's suffrage... also, the mouse.

it's not to say that all new ideas are good ideas... but just because someone laughs at it or doesn't initially see value, doesn't mean it's a bad idea.

best shock machine ever

so, these guys have modified the mattel mindflex to SHOCK you if your brain activity becomes too frantic... which is funny because once you get shocked i'm sure your brain activity shoots through the roof, shocking you again, increasing your activity again. this might be a good way to train yourself though to stay calm through pain or other adverse situations. i remember this black belt told me, a persons reaction, when they get punched, is to close their eyes, and how you have to condition yourself not to blink when you get punched. this is kind of the same thing, except, it's a shock... i really want one of these.

OKGO this to shall pass - oners make me cry

you've probably seen the video. not the marching band one, but the one with the rube goldberg machine. here Adam Sadowsky, the president (?) of Syyn Labs explains the process of building this machine. the best piece of advice: put the big reliable stuff at the end of the take to shorten reset times.

this video gets me a little choked up at the end, when it tilts up to (what I assume is) the crew of the video cheering for a good take. this might be less significant to anyone who's never put together a "oner" but trying to do something complex with many moving parts and record it all in a single moving shot is probably one of the most stressful kinds of shots a crew can put together. but when it comes together, and everyone hits their marks, and all the gags happen right on time, it's truly great feeling. i've never really been much for team sports, but i imagine it's the same sort of elation a team feels after pulling together and making a big play. it's an inspiring feeling that if enough people got together and focused their desires into a singular goal, anything would be possible.
